Nostalgia as a sales tool: the Mustang GT California Special returns for 2019
After a short one year absence, the Ford Mustang California Special returns as model 2019 with a limited edition (though Ford did not say how many units) of coupes and convertible versions.
The basic recipe remains unchanged, a Mustang GT with a little more amenities and a unique look. If this sounds familiar to you, it is because it is the same recipe as the Ford Mustang Bullit we told you about a few weeks ago.
Visually the front of the Ford Mustang GT California Special 2019 is distinguished from its more common brethren by its black grille with the emblem of the horse with the three bars on the left side. For the rest, we see the same front inspired by the mask of Darth Vader including the new LED fog lights, whose technology has made the huge fog lights embedded in the grille of the Mustang GT are a thing of the past.
On the sides we get a black side strip that runs through the middle of the doors with the acronym GT / CS on its front and a false air intake just after the end of the doors.
Under the hood of the Ford Mustang GT California Special 2019, we find the 5.0-liter displacement V8 'Coyote' of the regular Mustang GT, developing 460 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque with a top speed of 155 miles per hour.
The car can be ordered with a 10-speed automatic transmission or a manual of 6, the latter is equipped with speed-pairing technology to help less-skilled drivers lose momentum, or as Ford puts it, to smooth out changes.
The new Ford Mustang GT California Special will go on sale in the summer of 2018 along with the Mustang Bullit 2019.
