Hyundai announces the production of the first van in its history
For a second time in as many years, the Korean manufacturer announces that it gives the green light to the production of the first "pick-up" of its history.
The Hyundai Santa Cruz pickup truck may have more of a future than we think, finally.
Yet, unveiled world premiere at the Detroit show in 2015, the prototype of this kind of amalgam between a Honda Ridgeline and a Subaru Baja was more like a study of style than serious production intentions.
After all, who could have taken seriously ...:
A concept of "lifestyle van";
based on the platform of a compact utility (in this case, the Hyundai Tucson);
four doors, two of which opened in the opposite direction;
five-seater and short box;
but that said box agrees to stretch its recessed section when it is necessary to transport its batch of trinkets;
and, top of the North American dream: a diesel engine, which still does not exist in the portfolio of the brand on our continent
Yet, the Asian manufacturer announces that it will manufacture it, this compact van. Uh ... it's the second time in as many years as it's done; remember that it was mentioned in international automotive publications at that summer time last year. The journalistic wildlife was even expecting a 2019 production version to hit the end of its grille at the Los Angeles Fall Show ...
… but no. This time, the Bible Automotive News reports. that Hyundai USA has given the green light to that which would come to compete with the current GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado, the eventual (return of) Ford Ranger and - believe it or not: the possible Jeep Wrangler pick-up.
Wondering if this Hyundai Santa Cruz (not to be confused with the Hyundai Veracruz utility of the last decade) will join Canada?
Of course, no confirmation yet, but remember that in February 2016, the Toronto Auto Show had proudly received the prototype ... we also strongly questioned its production!
