2018 MERCEDES AMG PROJECT ONE - With its hybrid hypercar of 1000 hp
2018 MERCEDES AMG PROJECT ONE - With its hybrid hypercar of 1000 hp, unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the German manufacturer intends to show that performance and efficiency are not antinomic.
2018 MERCEDES AMG PROJECT ONE - On the one hand, there is the Toyota Prius: low fuel consumption, kilometers in 100% electric mode. On the other side is the Mercedes AMG F1 W08, the current single-seater of the German brand in Grand Prix. Put all this in a (big) shaker, shake well, and you will get the Mercedes AMG Project One. This hypercar hybrid is presented for the very first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show on the stand of the German brand.
What did she inherit from F1? The architecture of its engine, a 1.6-liter turbo V6 given for 680 hp ch coupled with four electric power units. The total power is 1000 hp. What did she inherit from the Prius? The ability to drive 25 km in 100% electric mode. We still a much more limited consumption than its rivals (Aston Martin Valkyrie, Ferrari LaFerrari or Bugatti Chiron ...).
Let's go to the numbers fair. The V6 direct injection, four-valve, cylinder block is engineered by the engineers at Brixworth (UK), where the F1 engines are already built. The machine is capable of revving at 11,000 rpm, which is unique for a production car. It is completed by four electric motors: two are located in the front axle and recover energy with braking (120 kW or 164 hp each). A third unit is connected to the turbo and controls its rotational speed, reducing the response time. The latter strengthens the power at the level of the crankshaft. These last two devices are inspired by the MGU-H used in Formula 1 since 2014.
The power is transmitted to an 8-speed robotic gearbox, controlled using paddles on the steering wheel. The driver can choose to use several modes (100% electric, thermal or both). If the front electric motors are used, the Mercedes AMG Project One goes from "simple" propulsion to an all-wheel drive (as on the LMP1 24h of Le Mans).
Performance: 0 to 100 km / h in 2.5 seconds. 0 to 200 km / h in 6 seconds. 350 km / h at Nardo.
The chassis is up. Its monocoque carbon structure (again, the influence of F1 ...) integrates the cockpit. It is stopped by carbon-ceramic brakes and maintained by active suspensions. On board, the atmosphere is not joking: small rectangular steering wheel, minimalist equipment, bucket pickets and two screens as instrumentation.
An interior that completes an exterior that is finally quite classic. However, we notice a few details giving it a rather tormented appearance: the abundance of air intakes necessary to cool the whole, the "shark-end" on the bonnet (as in F1 ...), the huge diffuser generating the support behind ... The cockpit treatment is reminiscent of the wonderful CLK-GTR of the 1990s.
The 300 copies planned have already been awarded. These will be delivered from the end of 2018. Buyers will sign a check of 2.3 million euros to afford the most techno supercars.
