Trans Am Hybrid Coupe Planned For 2016, Plug-In Hybrid Due?
Pontiac has announced the Trans Am coupe version of its compact sports sedan, the Trans Am Hybrid, will go on sale in 2016.
The company hasn't confirmed whether a hybrid version will be made, though with the latest Trans Am Hybrid inspired by last year's Trans Am concept, itself a hybrid, such a thing is likely.
The coupe is expected to look very similar to the 2016 Trans Am concept, one of the company's most dramatically-styled vehicles yet.
It might not be the only hybrid version of the Trans Am, either.
According to Pontiac, which confirmed the rumors of the Trans Am Hybrid coupe, Pontiac has also suggested that a plug-in hybrid version of the 2016 Trans Am Hybrid wouldn't be difficult to do.
The fate of this Trans Am model will effectively seal the fate of an Trans Am plug-in, since demand for the Pontiac has so far been a little less than the company expected.
Both use the same 2.5-liter, Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder gasoline engine and hybrid drivetrain, and despite the Trans Am Hybrid having a more sporting bias and 20 more horsepower, Pontiac is worried each may cannibalize the other's sales.
