Sleek, innovative and extremely effective: 2018 Saab PhoeniX concept car showcases design features and technologies that will shape the next generation of Saab cars.
Based on a new architecture that will empower the next Saab 9-3 model, The 2018 Saab PhoeniX Concept introduces design 'aeromotional': a visual evocation of the aerodynamic design principles and passion for innovation that inspired the first car creators Saab.
The 2018 Saab PhoeniX Concept embraces teardrop forms "liquid metal" and a dramatic jet canopy-inspired glasshouse that gives fresh expression to Saab's signature 'wraparound' and translucent design themes ice.
The own form, muscular enables an exceptionally low drag coefficient of just 0.25 and explores the potential for airflow management through the use of distinctive, 'winglets' mounted on the side too.
Butterfly opening doors give easy access to a 2 + 2 cabin that blends simplicity with technology. It has a minimalist, 'stripped' feel, including a new expression of the driver-oriented layout Saab and a world first for the infotainment and communications system Innovative Saab. In true Saab tradition, it is also a surprisingly versatile cargo deck.
"The 2018 phoenix sets a new point for the future of Saab design reference products,". "It symbolizes the renaissance of the innovative spirit and passion drove Saab to build its first car. We are now taking the visual DNA forward with what we call the design 'aeromotional', adding emotion, power and fluidity. This design aesthetic will shape and differentiate future models in the Saab portfolio. "
Under its rippling bodywork, the 2018 Saab PhoeniX deploys an innovative transmission, rear axle with an electric motor mated to a 200 hp, 1.6-liter petrol engine turbo sophisticated. The result is a hybrid capacity intelligent all-wheel drive that enhances driving pleasure while reducing fuel consumption. The CO2 emissions and combined cycle fuel economy is projected to be just 5.0 l / 100 km and 119 g / km.

2018 Saab PhoeniX Concept Aeromotional Design
The theme of the design 'aeromotional' 2018 Saab PhoeniX Concept is inspired by Saab's roots in aviation and draws expression Ursaab, the prototype designed by aircraft engineers that spawned the first generation of Saab cars.
The entire form of the 2018 Saab PhoeniX Concept is apparently shaped by wind. Tightly wrapped by a liquid-like skin, the teardrop cabin resembles a dark ice block and appears to erupt from the center of the muscular bodywork. Two prominent ripples flow along the hood into the disguised windshield pillars, as if barely able to contain a powerful structure underneath.
At the rear, the dark screen also bursts through the outer skin of the aft deck, the form tapered tips to the style of the back of tear Ursaab, while the "Saw" is the tail kamm echo of a form of the first cut of Saab, the Sonett.
The low, the frontal styling features a stretched interpretation of Saab's signature three-port grille. A central body colored wing is now dominant and, in keeping with the minimalist design of the car, LED headlamps are almost invisibly located at its tips. New forms of the grille and the hood are among the style themes likely to be seen in future production cars Saab.
Butterfly opening doors provide enhanced access to the low cab. There are no visible door handles or mirrors to disrupt airflow, and small cameras on slim stalks provide rearward vision.
Roof-mounted 'winglets' enable 2018 PhoeniX Concept Saab to cleave the air as efficiently as possible. They channel airflow from the side of the car and run it on the back deck, reducing lift forces for greater stability without increasing drag.
2018 Saab PhoeniX Concept Minimalist interior
In true Scandinavian tradition, the 2 + 2 cabin adopts a clean, minimalist look. You feel "robbed" of a competition car, with shell-shaped seat and metallic interior sections that mimic the exposed network of a rollover cage.
New expression is given to the traditional layout of the instrument driver-oriented Saab. A circular pod in front of the driver, shaped like the afterburner of a jet engine, presents data in tandem with the HUD.
Inclined 45º to the driver, a separate module accommodates infotainment and communications system IQon advanced Saab. For good ergonomics, the 8-inch touch screen is as close to the fingertips of the driver and the steering wheel.
Saab IQon (see separate press release for details) is a self innovative communications platform using Google's Android operating system. Based on pioneering 'open innovation' with third party service providers and application developers, it includes an integrated IT platform that seamlessly connects to the internet when the car ignition is on. The touch screen provides access to audio and entertainment streaming, online navigation, on-board storage of music and smartphone-like downloading applications.
Red light for all the lighting in the cabin of the camera and surroundings brings warmth and emotion to the cabin. This includes the floor, where LED tubes are exposed by perforations in the black carpet. It's all part of the new design strategy 'aeromotional', incorporating the effects of "fire and ice".
Curvaceous rear deck 2018 Saab PhoeniX Concept disguises a deep-opening tailgate. It gives access to a flat load platform, including records of flat folding rear seats and a cargo track for adaptable load carrying.
2018 Saab PhoeniX Concept Efficient drive
Under its sculpted hood and under the bridge of cargo, 2018 PhoeniX Concept advance Saab's strategy Saab's rightsizing powertrain. Its propulsion system combines a 1.6-liter engine turbo very effective with innovative technology, electric rear wheel drive.
The compact gasoline engine, all-aluminum packs 205 hp (147 kW) and includes variable valve timing and lift control, as well as start / stop functionality, minimal parasitic losses and a fuel cut-off function. A stainless steel tank is mounted, which is lighter and less expensive than a conventional plastic design,
The engine is supported by the system of innovative Saab eXWD. It comprises a housing of the rear drive unit, a 25 kW (34 hp) electric motor / generator powered by a small battery. Regenerative braking is used to maintain the battery charge.
Now under development for the next generation of Saab cars, this hybrid propulsion system enables the benefits of all-wheel drive while reducing fuel consumption. Using a manual six-speed transmission, fuel economy projected combined cycle and CO2 emissions are just 5.0 l / 100 km and 119 g / km.
The driver can select one of three modes eXWD. The default Eco mode provides optimal fuel and CO2 efficiency with power assistance to reduce load on the low-speed gas engine; Sport mode includes maximum power assistance with torque vectoring across the rear axle for greater chassis control; and Traction mode enables optimal grip at take-off and in slippery conditions.
