2018 Tesla Model S P85D tested: 700 hp very quiet (+ photos)
German competition prepares
His highly anticipated 2018 Model X SUV will be delivered to the first US clients this fall, while Model III family should be commercialized by 2017. To counter the offensive Tesla, German manufacturers are working to develop sedans and crossovers 100% electric. Audi Q6 and Q8 will have its e-tron, BMW X6 on the i9 base and its electric Porsche Pajun ... but with 3 to 5 years behind the leader. To lead the race to market electric vehicles, Tesla also partnered with Panasonic to produce batteries in Nevada (USA), and by 2-3 years in the Land of Hesse (Germany).
A new version AWD
If we had already taken the wheel of the Tesla Model S P85 version, we waited with great anticipation testing the electric sedan version P85D. For the uninitiated, refers to P trim level performance, 85 to the battery capacity (85 kWh) and D to the Dual Motors wheel drive. Appointment is thus taken at 6 pm at Tesla Service Center Stuttgart. While the city with the headquarters of Mercedes-Benz awakens slowly, the Model S glides silently on the tarmac. From the huge touch screen in the center console, the driver selects the "Insane Mode" which delivers all the power ...
A politically incorrect Insane Mode
Out of the "peripheral", we are committed on the highway A80 in the direction of Ulm. Pedal to the metal on the ramp, your servant becomes mad flywheel. Few politically correct at the time of the all-repressive French, the word "enjoyable" must yet be used. The acceleration is linear, never seems to end. Braking is biting, comfort on exceptional Autobahn through controlled air suspension (option 2 300 euros), the hellish times. On non-limited portions almost deserted at dawn, the speedometer quickly displays 250 km / h.
The fastest sedan in the world
How a sedan to look wise can it turn into demonic vehicle that would "crack" any respectable family man? Simply by integrating a second electric block on the front end. Architecture offering a full transmission "electric", that is to say without mechanical transmission shaft connecting the two axles. Here's a quick comparison between the three main versions of the Tesla:
Model S 60: Battery 60 kWh output of 380 hp, speed limited to 190 km / h, standardized autonomy of 390 km, a 0 à 100 km / h in 6.2 s run
Model S 85: Battery 85 kWh output of 380 hp, speed limited to 225 km / h, standardized autonomy of 502 km, a 0 à 100 km / h run in 5.6 seconds (4.4 s on P85 Version )
Model S P85D: 85 kWh battery, power of 700 hp, speed limited to 250 km / h, standardized autonomy of 480 km, a 0 à 100 km / h run in 3.4 s
A total capacity of 700 hp
While the Model S "conventional" are content to be propulsions - via two power blocks of 190 hp each positioned on the rear axle - the P85D release becomes a 4x4 with a first electric motor of 224 hp (front axle ) and a second of 476 hp (rear) powered by a massive lithium-ion battery mounted in the vehicle floor. Result: a very low center of gravity and optimum weight distribution (50/50). A quality that, in the laces of the Black Forest leading us to its capital Freiburg im Breisgau, offers a healthy electric sedan handling, despite its 2,239 kg (+ 139 kg compared to the P85).
A motor never faulted
Insane in the data sheet, the power is easily tamed thanks to excellent electronic management of the maximum torque of 980 Nm. Every second, the software can calculate and manage up to 100 times the torque distribution between the two trains. In the still snow-covered passes, the Model S P85D pushing very hard without that motor is faulted. At the exit of a turn, the acceleration override in their seats the driver and passengers. In the Schwarzwald where the Crusaders vehicles are rare, only the whistling of electric motors and road noise are heard.
The semi-autonomous driving system need to evolve
If we do not return to the qualities and amenities of the cabin (read test Model S P85), we will focus on the new semi-autonomous driving system Auto Pilot. With his camera in the windscreen and its ultrasonic radar, the device offers the adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance braking or retention in the queue. Nothing exceptional in the country's German premium, except ... Tesla Motors was born in the heart of Silicon Valley. And the Model S will take advantage of software upgrades for download today. Clearly, Elon Musk has promised functionality exit automatic parking and other news by summer 2017.
Trial Balance, rates and taxes
Except P85D badge stuck on the trunk, the Tesla Model S 4x4 is identical to a classic version. Nothing changes in the cabin, as well as the capacity of front and rear trunks are preserved. The real novelty is to look under the hood, specifically on the axles. Two power blocks with a total power of 700 hp for genuine autonomy that should be around 400 km in normal use. With its amazingly easy handling, the Model S P85D is accessible to all, or almost. Which is not the case for its price: 107,040 euros, excluding bonuses "green" for 6300 euros and without options. For businesses, the Model S is totally exempt from tax on company cars (TVS). European commercialization expected this supercharged version in May 2017.

First electric car to offer real autonomy over 350 km, the Tesla Model S has been enhanced in 2017 at the Autonomous an AWD version. Called Model S P85D, California becomes the fastest sedan in the world with its total output of 700 hp. First test at the wheel in Germany, between Stuttgart and Freiburg im Breisgau.
Tesla Motors: a constructor in its own right
Launched in 2012 in the US market, the Tesla Model S electric sedan became a true icon. The pessimists who predicted the end of the private car, the Model S is a great foot-nose combining elegant lines, power and zero emissions. Created in 2003 in the heart of Silicon Valley start-up has grown to become a fully-fledged manufacturer. And even if sales volumes remain marginal and its mono-product catalog worthy of a Soviet industrial, Tesla Motors raised the enthusiasm of financial markets, customers and competitors.
35,000 Model S passed in 2018
Last year, the Palo Alto firm has produced some 35,000 copies of its Model S on its unique assembly site located in Fremont (California). In the light of BMW sales worldwide - 2.12 million vehicles sold in 2014 - the comparison is not enough wonder. Yet Tesla Motors had compared favorably with its premium competitors in 2013. That year, the Model S is sold in the USA was more than the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class combined. And industrial co-founded by Elon Musk does not stop there way.
