Geneva 2018: the Skoda Vision X raises the hybrid SUV to its highest exponent
The concept Skoda Vision X, first hybrid in the history of the Czech manufacturer, has been presented at the Geneva Motor Show and can use gasoline, compressed natural gas and electricity for its propulsion.
The Czech manufacturer Skoda, a member of the Volkswagen Group's brand conglomerate, has presented the Skoda Vision X concept, the first hybrid in the history of the brand, at the Geneva Motor Show. The new Skoda Vision X combines an SUV style body with an internal combustion engine compatible with gasoline or compressed natural gas and an electric propulsion system.
Skoda has decided to move towards electrification, like many small and large brands. By 2019, they will launch the new Skoda Superb hybrid plug-in sedan and the following year they will present the Skoda Vision E, their first all-electric and self-driving model. It has been announced that several components for different brands of the Volkswagen Group will also be manufactured at its plant in the Czech Republic.
On the new car presented in Geneva, the CEO of Skoda, Bernhard Maier, said: "Emotional design, modern propulsion technology and total connectivity: with the Skoda Vision X concept we present our vision of a modern urban crossover".
Hybrid propulsion with two electric motors
The most striking of the SUV is its hybrid propulsion system. It uses a turbocharged TSI G-TEC engine of 1.5 liters and four cylinders ready to run on CNG (compressed natural gas) and two electric motors: one 48V for the electric starter-alternator and another engine that will send the power to the rear wheels. The CNG storage tank is located under the rear seat.
The main engine of the vehicle will be the thermal engine, which can use CNG or gasoline, with the capacity to generate 130 HP. While the electric batteries will be used as a range extender up to 2 km. When the driver requires it, he will be able to use electric power and thus have four-wheel drive. In combination, the Skoda Vision X can accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 9.3 seconds, with a maximum speed of 200 km / h and a total range of 650 km.
Design and measurements
It is a small SUV, but with a lot of personality. On the front there is a bonnet with variations in the relief and a metal grill that looks very striking with the intense green color exhibited in Geneva. The wheelbase is 2,645 mm, with 4,255 mm in length, 1,537 mm in height and 1,807 mm in width. The trunk has a capacity of 380 liters. In the cabin there is a mixture of various materials such as artificial leather, breathable fabrics and rubber canvas on the seats, the board and the door frames. "The exterior design provides a concrete vision of the third member of the successful SUV family, and with this model, we will attract even more customers to the brand in the future," Maier said.
In the centre console, which exhibits a polished glass finish, we see a touch screen that allows access to the different functions of the car, shows the mode of operation and the conditions of the engines. The instruments are observed through a digital panel and there are practically no physical buttons in the SUV.
