Mercedes-AMG GT R will be the safety car of Formula 1
The Mercedes-AMG GT R will be the official safety car of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) for the 2018 season of Formula 1 and will make its debut at the Grand Prix of Melbourne, Australia next weekend.
With an engine of 585 Hp, the top model of the AMG GT series will be the "most powerful safety car of all time" and will ensure "maximum safety in the Formula 1 circuits" during 20 races of this competition, has insured Mercedes-Benz in a statement.
Mercedes-AMG GT R
The brand has supplied the "safety car" of Formula 1 since 1996.
The Mercedes-AMG GT R has a top speed of 318 km / h and takes 3.6 seconds to go from zero to 100 km / h thanks to a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 front mid-engine.
Between the characteristics that grant the exceptional dynamism, stand out the design of the chassis, its active aerodynamics and its light construction. The large wheel arches, in turn, allow a wider track for an "optimal" grip and a faster turnaround, explained the brand.

It has light forged rims, steering on the rear axle, nine adjustments of the traction control and adjustable suspension with additional electronic regulation.
All this allows the Mercedes-AMG GT R to maintain a high enough speed to prevent the brakes and tires of Formula 1 from getting too cold and their engines to overheat, the company said.
To become a safety car, the model has undergone a small number of modifications, such as the incorporation of the AMG Track Package with safety cage and high performance ceramic braking system (which are equipped as optional).
On the outside, the Mercedes-AMG GT R Safety Car differs from the production vehicle by the FIA F1 vinyls and the bridge of lights in carbon fiber, designed to offer the least possible resistance.

According to Mercedes-Benz, the design and position of the bridge of lights are the result of an "intense" work in the wind tunnel.
The device screen on the left shows the international television signal, while the one on the right can play both an animated representation of the current position of the cars on the circuit and the current times per lap.
For the management of the visual communication data, the "InCar Hotspot" with wireless WLAN connection included in the vehicle is used.
