BMW i5 | 2019 | New electric 4-door and 600 km: One amazing car
BMW continues with its commitment to create an ever more complete range of electric vehicles. To the known i3 and i8, the Bavarian firm is studying the possibility of making a new model with a saloon or sedan body, which would be renamed i5. Of course, the new model is still under study and for the moment there is nothing confirmed as it would still lack the official presentation - it could be in 2018 - and its marketing - around 2019.
Initially, BMW wanted the i5 to be an i3-based model, albeit with more size and sportiness. However, in the end BMW is so excited about this model that it has decided that it has its own character. That is why it has evolved into saloon forms, a type of bodywork in which despite increasingly less adept, BMW continues to think that it will still have a great pull in the next decade.
Another feature that will have the next i5 is that BMW wants to have a more adjusted cost development. Hence he has chosen to keep the central pillar, in front of the rest of his electrical that does not carry it.
For this reason, the next i5 would not be made at 100% carbon. While it is true that it would have this material, it should also be noted that the German brand has decided not to bet 100% on the carbon in the structure.
As for the shapes of the body, everything points to a saloon with coupe design and very high roof fall. A design that will not completely influence the habitability, since BMW handles fairly wide interior dimensions.
This is because the wheelbase can be quite long - higher than that of a Series 3- since the electric motor occupies less space than a conventional engine. Hence, the rear and front overhangs are very small, leaving all the space possible to the interior of the passenger compartment and improving the interior space of the mentioned Series 3.
As for the mechanical variants that incorporate there will be several. There is talk of a pure electric that would be around 200 CV and would exceed 400 kilometres and also of a plug-in hybrid that would already surpass 400 CV and that would add to the electric motor another one of petrol of three or four cylinders. As a novelty, in addition, this electric could be charged the battery by induction.
And finally, the price ... The new i5 could be on sale in 2019 for about 40,000 euros, as a starting point, a really interesting price as we are talking about a sports sedan, low emissions and greater autonomy.
This possible i5 electric would be based on the prototype presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show and from here you can see some images. This is the BMW i Vision Dynamics concept car. It is characterized by four doors and an electric propulsion system that allows it to achieve great performances: from 0 to 100 km / h in 4 seconds and a top speed of 200 km / h.
However, the most striking thing is not so much the number of benefits but rather its autonomy. In this sense, this BMW i Vision Dynamics allows a single load to travel up to 600 kilometers.
In turn, this possible model is a further commitment to electrification within BMW. In particular, the Bavarian company says it will have 25 electrified models - 12 of them purely electric - in 2025. This BMW i5 would be one of 12 purely electric.
