Audi R8 (2019). Info and official photos of the restyled version
The power inflation does not stop. With 570 hp, the Audi R8 can calmly await the arrival of the new Porsche 911.
At Audi, even the sharpest sportswoman goes through the box restyling. The R8 submits to the new anti-pollution standards and takes the opportunity to win some horses and aesthetic modifications of detail.
It's a fact, the restyled R8 will not demode the old model. Nevertheless, the magnifying glass is not necessary to distinguish them: a simple glance towards the grille allows to note a clear widening and especially the disappearance of the chromed entourage. We notice especially the new triangular scoops that come to nest at the end of the front wing. The profile does not evolve but the offer of rims is renewed, while at the back, we notice the unpublished oval escapements and the honeycomb grid now in one piece.
Seen closely in the studios of the brand, these developments appear more convincing and less aggressive than in photography. In the cockpit the changes are minimal, since they are limited to new choices of upholstery. The atmosphere however remains very exclusive, and up to date even if the R8 has not yet moved to the logic any screen recently adopted by the brand.
Up to 620 hp!
In order to meet the new anti-pollution standards, the V10 has been modified, in particular to accommodate a particulate filter, now essential on gasoline engines. The opportunity was too good to win some horses, obtained by significantly changing the distribution. According to the engineers we interviewed, the exhaust valves were indeed enlarged and everything was done to reduce friction losses. As far as we could judge, the sound in slow motion does not seem to suffer too much from the arrival of the filter. It is true that in the matter, the atmospheric V10 has the margin if one compares it with the last turbocharged engines slightly aphones of competitor Porsche.
All of these modifications result in a weight gain of between 15 and 20 kg but the results are substantial. The R8 V10 quattro (note the appearance of the quattro suffix) wins 30 hp and 10 Nm of torque. With 570 hp and 550 Nm, it drops the 0 to 100 km / h in 3.4 seconds (3.5 on the roadster). The most powerful model abandons the name "Plus" in favor of "Performance" and wins for the occasion 10 hp and 20 Nm, a total of 620 hp and 560 Nm the time at 0 to 100 km / h passes to 3.1 seconds for the coupe and 3.2 on the roadster. Note that the RWS two-wheel drive version will not be renewed.
A sharper chassis
Not only will the R8 be more powerful but it will adopt many evolutions on the dynamic part, beginning with a fully recalibrated stability control system. What to gain 1.5 m braking from 100 to 0 km / h and 5 m from 200 km / h.
The arrival of new Michelin Cup tires on its 20-inch ride should further improve its grip. The laws of controlled damping have been modified in the direction of a greater difference between the different modes of driving while variable steering assistance has been revised, in particular to improve stability at high speed. Finally note that the R8 will offer for the first time as an option stabilizer bar in aluminum and carbon fiber. What reduce the unsprung weight of about 2 kg, which will undoubtedly provide great satisfaction to the most athletic customers. The new R8 will be marketed in the first quarter of 2019. Rates are not yet known.
