2019 Volkswagen T-Roc, first test of the German compact SUV
Volkswagen is committed to entering into each and every segment available in the market. Or create them. This time, it is submerged in the disputed frame of the compact SUVs, below the Tiguan, with a model that smells like best-sellers. We test the new Volkswagen T-Roc.
Volkswagen T-Roc, unmistakable design
Surprise Yes, it is an assessment that is not usually referred to a Volkswagen. The design of the T-Roc is a revolution within the brand, a vehicle that has managed to evolve the stylistic values of the firm and move them to the SUV world without resembling their brothers in the range.
Let's be frank, at first glance it is not a clone of the Tiguan, nor of the Touareg (which will take over next year), but it follows a path of its own full of personality. The daytime running lights integrated in the bumper (standard on Sport) are the 'look' that characterizes it as well as the headlights in continuation of the grille.
It measures 4.23 meters long, is somewhat smaller than the Golf, but also plays with a wide body and something taller. The free height to the ground does not stand out precisely, although the general aspect introduces it fully in the so-called SUV style.
If it was not enough, add plastic protections, a marked waist line and large wheel arches, a chrome line that runs through the roof and the fashionable floating roof. This can go to contrast, in fact, it offers two options, black and white.
On the other hand, 17-inch wheels come standard with the most basic Advance finish, with different designs depending on the finish. There are three, Advance, Advance Style and Sport. These last two give way to the two-tone roof.
Volkswagen T-Roc, Polo inspiration
The Volkswagen T-Roc uses the MQB platform of the Golf, but its interior takes the inspiration of the Polo. Almost traced, brings a youthful and colorful touch never before seen in a product of the firm. I like it.
There is not a single fluffy plastic, neither on the upper part of the dashboard nor the doors (criticized when in the Golf itself), which worsens the quality to the touch, but the assembly is extremely solid and well executed. The result is a cozy interior, where a very voluminous dashboard stands out that imprints the false sensation of introducing us even more into the driving position.
As far as personalization is concerned, there are four colors to choose for the moldings. Although they can be burdensome, since they constitute a good part of the dashboard, they greatly increase the visual quality of the whole.
Volkswagen T-Roc, something more habitable
Habitability is one of the key features. It is not the most spacious in its category, not at least the most modular, but it is one of the ones with the most trunk. They are 445 liters in versions of simple traction and 392 liters with total traction.
It is spacious, at least for passengers less than 1.90 meters high. All seats offer a more upright posture than Golf, but equally comfortable. The foam of the seats is, in any case, a soft tad.
As far as the back row is concerned, there is room for three, preferably two. The central passenger sits in a shapeless seat, harder and with a very bulky central tunnel. The side seats are comfortable and spacious. Curiously, they seem more usable by height than by length, unlike many of their rivals.
Volkswagen T-Roc, equipped and safe
The most noteworthy in the technological section is the new digital display Volkswagen Digital Cockpit for the control panel. It is smaller than the one previously known (11.7 versus 12.3 inches), but offers, in addition to higher resolution, a more extensive personalization. Now finally it allows the vision of the navigator to the complete one and there are numerous new options to the taste of the driver. It shows more information at the same time, which improves the distribution and use of it. It is reserved for the Sport finish.
For its part, all T-Roc comes standard with the multimedia equipment Composition Media with 8-inch touch screen. The operation is very correct and integrates Android Auto series and Apple CarPlay. At option is the Discover Media team of the same size but with navigation functions.
In the rest it is at the hands of the catalog of assistants to the conduction, with a control of adaptive cruise speed that appears of series, as well as the Lane Assist. Headlights in LED technology are reserved for the Sport, as well as the rear view camera.
