It was the first of the series 6 of Peugeot, the first to incorporate a 6-cylinder engine of 2,148 cc and capable of offering 60 hp of power. A priori it was an important step for Peugeot, in a market in which it had not yet entered.
The performance of this Peugeot 601 was in line with the competition, and was significantly larger in size than its small brothers. However, this was not enough. The sector evolved in those years by leaps and bounds, and soon the engine of 601 was almost obsolete, especially when it was put on sale the Citroën Traction Avant, a symbol of the era and a vehicle clearly superior.
Another of the main criticisms that had to face was that, despite being larger in size than the smaller models of Peugeot, its interior did not seem more spacious, so that its comfort was questioned. This, together with its just power, high consumption and some reliability problems, did the rest.
