Volkswagen announced plans to produce electric van-e BUDD 2017 Or 2018
VW unveiled the electric van BUDD-e last month at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) - and they just announced plans to produce electric Microbus successor entirely. Dr. Volkmar Tanneberger, head of electronics development at VW says that a production version of the Budd-e concept could reach the end of the decade.
"You will see a car that looks a lot like this, the SEM platform, reach production," said Dr. Tanneberger. "I can not say exactly when, but 2017 or 2018 or so."
BUDD-e VW electrifies the iconic Microbus with a driving range 373-mile
In concept form, the Budd-e has a battery 101 kWh lithium-ion battery that offers a driving range to 373 miles. Since the production version is still about four years away, it could have a range of over 400 miles, as the battery technology continues to improve each year. The platform will be used by SEM several hybrids and fully electric plug-in. "The basic idea is to develop a modular toolbox and take this idea to the dead battery in the series production engine in the front, one in back," said Dr. Tanneberger.
While VW has confirmed that a production version of the concept e-BUDD arrive in a few years, it remains to see if it will take more style elements of the original Microbus.
