2018 BMW i8 Roadster - the expected convertible version of the company's striking plug-in hybrid model
The car likes to draw attention and each stroke of his body is a demand for sight. With 4.68 meters in length and only 1.29 meters high, the BMW i8 would not go unnoticed even if it was proposed. It is a show whose function always begins with the same stroke of effect: the two side doors rise to the sky and expose a good part of the carbon fiber from which it is built. After the arrival of the BMW i3, the German brand is betting on its new range of hybrid vehicles with which it wants to demonstrate maximum sustainability. The BMW i8, with its configuration of 2 + 2 seats, wants to make its driver experience a revolutionary way of driving, but remains true to the typical driving pleasure of Bavarian cars.
A sports car with an ecological vocation
The BMW i8 uses the 'LifeDrive' architecture with an aluminum frame and the passenger compartment made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic. Of course, the car has a very aggressive and sporty design. Also, the distribution of the dough, as is customary in the brand, is 50% in the front and back. Regarding mechanics, the BMW i8 uses a hybrid plug-in system consisting of a 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol engine with 'TwinPower Turbo' technology and an electric drive with a lithium-ion battery that can be recharged in a domestic power outlet. The combustion block have a power of 231CV that is applied to the rear axle while the 131CV of the electric motor goes to the front axle. By the way, the maximum torque of the entire system is 570 Nm. In addition, this BMW can be driven only with electric motor power for a maximum of 35 kilometers at a maximum speed of 120 km / h.
The BMW i8 is a pleasure for driving
BMW does not give up its experience in the pleasure of driving. For this reason, it has created the 'Driving Experience Control', as well as the 'eDrive' key, which is exclusive on the i8. The 'Driving Experience Control' is a button located in the center console that allows you to choose between specific chassis settings: 'Comfort' and 'Eco Pro'. Selecting the first, a vehicle is driven that is very balanced in both its dynamism and efficiency. On the other hand, the 'Eco Pro' mode is focused on obtaining the lowest average consumption and reduces, among other things, the expenditure of electrical energy of elements such as climate control. You only have to press the 'Sport' button on the automatic gear lever to get to know the sportiest BMW i8. In this way, the car activates the most sporting suspension and the power delivery of the engines is carried out more quickly. To enjoy all its power, the batteries must be full. As soon as they weaken, horsepower begins to diminish. BMW can not do magic, and even using carbon fiber components to lighten the set, the BMW i8 is a 1.6-ton car. When kick-down is done in 'Sport' mode, the combustion engine is activated and its sporty soul is excessively noisy. And it only reaches 250 km / h with batteries at full load. As soon as it descends, benefits are significantly reduced. The suspension has a somewhat nervous response, 20-inch wheels a touch too dry. The steering, however, is exceptionally precise and direct, but nevertheless, this is not a car for a virtuous handling: the weight finds little support in its slim front wheels and pushes the car outwards. An interior arrived from the future
Accessing the interior is somewhat complicated, because it involves saving the great stirrup that separates the seat. Once inside the cabin, the BMW i8 gives a surprising sense of spaciousness, much more than you can expect. Behind there are two seats, but only recommended for children. For its part, the trunk is narrow: only 154 liters capacity, just gives a weekend getaway. On the dashboard are some perfectly recognizable controls on the other BMW models. If normally everything is oriented towards the driver, here that philosophy is even more palpable. The standard equipment is very complete and includes, among others: navigation system 'Professional' with proactive management of the drive unit for purely electric driving, fully digitized display on the dashboard, 'BMW iDrive' control system with independent screen, sports seats with leather upholstery, and four atmospheres of interior equipment. The equipment is completed with headlights with LED technology or innovative headlights with laser technology, available as an option. Without forgetting the wide range of functions' BMW CnectedDrive 'and mobility services specific to' BMW i ', including, for example, intermodal guidance to destination. BMW i8 Roadster: even more attractive From the restyling of this first generation, BMW surprised everyone with the presentation of a second body for one of the most striking sports cars of the moment. Under the name of BMW i8 Roadster, this version has a mechanism that is capable of folding the roof in 15 seconds and offer, if possible, a much more attractive image for the car. This cabrio version has an overwhelming presence, partly because of the Targa style that adopts the side of the car. The price of this version has not yet been revealed, although it will be more expensive than the coupe model. In any case, it guarantees that the looks return on our i8 when it seemed that nothing could surprise anymore.
