Must See '' 2019 BMW i5 '' Review, Photo's, Features
BMW will put on sale in 2020 the new BMW iX3, its first all-electric SUV. However, and until that happens, we will have to settle for the images of the prototype, an advance of this BMW iX3 of 2020 that was presented in April 2018 during the Beijing Motor Show (China) with the name of BMW Concept iX3.
The arrival of this new BMW ix3de 2020 is confirmation of the commitment of the Bavarian manufacturer for the models with propulsion systems alternative to fossil fuels. In fact, BMW was one of the first manufacturers to have an electric model after the introduction of the i3 in 2014 and the i8 also in 2014. In addition, the German firm also has several plug-in hybrid models in its offer, as is the case with Series 3 PHEV, Series 5 PHEV, Series 7 PHEV and X5 PHEV.
This offer allowed BMW to sell a total of 100,000 electrified vehicles worldwide in 2017. In addition, the German firm has also indicated that soon the range will be extended with the arrival of the i4, also another 100% electric model.
This new BMW Concept ix3 is characterized by incorporating an electric generator with a power of 270 hp (198 kW). It also has a battery that has a capacity of 70 kilowatt hours (kWh), which would allow, according to the brand, obtain an autonomy of 400 kilometers, according to the WLTP cycle.
Another curious aspect of this model is that, unlike the X3 from which it is derived, which is manufactured in the United States, at the Spartanburg plant, it will be built in China. In particular this is due to the 'joint venture' or union of companies to make a new company between BMW and Briliance Auto, which has led to BMW Brilliance Automotive.
However, and despite being manufactured in China, this new BMW iX3 has many components in common with the third generation X3. It should be remembered in this regard that SUVs for the brand are key - they occupy 30% of their sales - especially if we talk about the X1 or this X3 of which the German brand has marketed about 1.5 million undiades since that was launched in 2003 and until 2017.
This new third generation X3 is characterized because it incorporates a new chassis that allows you to save weight compared to the previous model, despite having more equipment; besides admitting new propulsion systems, as is the case of the mentioned electric motor of the BMW iX3.
Other aspects that characterize this new X3 are a grill with a larger kidney, some optical groups whose daylight leaves the classic circular shapes and now are standard LEDs, new fog lights with LEDs and hexagonal shape instead of circular and a radar located at the bottom of the grid designed for the functions of driving aids. Also, the grid is active, which allows to open to cool the engine or close to gain aerodynamics -something that in the electric variant we do not think is necessary since the engine does not need cooling-.
From the interior we are left with the padded seats with three-dimensional shapes, with the three-zone climate control, the active ventilation system for the seats, the rear seats that have a 40/20/40 ratio, as well as the panoramic glass roof. Also new are the 12.3-inch instrument panel, the full-color Head Up Display, the 10.2-inch touchscreen with gesture control and larger slots around the car: 1-liter bottles can fit into the doors and the center console gap has more capacity.
Other novelties that this model incorporates is the key with digital display, as they also include the Series 5 and the Series 7. With this key you can not only open and close the X3 but you can also check the status of the car and ventilation, among other elements. It will not allow, at least initially, use the control to move forward or backward the vehicle, as it does with the Series 5 and Series 7.
As for the dimensions, this new BMW X3 measures 4.70 meters long, 1.89 meters wide and 1.67 meters high. Its wheelbase is 2.86 meters and its load capacity is 550 liters in the configuration of five seats and 1,660 liters with the rear seats folded down.
Regarding its predecessor, really this X3 is somewhat longer. In particular, it has 5 centimetres more in length and 5 centimetres more distance between axes. On the contrary, the width and the height are practically identical. The height varies 1.5 centimetres and the width only varies 1 centimetre.
This translates into a greater interior space. For example, in the front seats, the new X3 offers 149 centimeters in width and 101 centimeters in height. Both measures are good, especially if we take into account that the unit on which we have made measurements had a panoramic roof.
If we compare it with the previous generation, we see that it is 5 centimeters wider in distance for the shoulders and about 4 centimeters wider than the free distance to the ceiling. In the back seats the habitability is also good. Now it offers 141 centimeters in width and 96 centimeters in height. The previous generation offered a similar width but the height was 3 centimeters lower. Therefore, this new X3 is wider than the previous generation.
Another important section in this X3 is that it incorporates semiautonomous driving functions. For example, this model already incorporates the latest generation of active cruise control. This system adds the lane maintenance assistant and, from December 2017, will also incorporate the lane change function through the assistant. The latter works by operating the intermittent control. Thereafter will be when the car changes lanes when there is no traffic.
To this we must add the BMW Connected, a new system that allows users to interact with the car through mobile phones and smart watches. In this way, you can send appointments, address book, annotations to the car to take us to the destination address.
And all this, in addition, can be controlled by gestural control or also by means of a voice recognition assistant. It highlights, in turn, the new head up display, which offers higher quality and graphic representation.
Another important aspect of this new model is that it will incorporate a quite differentiated design with respect to the second generation. In this regard, BMW has placed its trust in Calvin Luk, who was responsible for the exterior design of the current BMW X1.
This new X3 arrives just at a key moment because its main rivals have just been renewed. For example, we talk about the Audi with the Q5 and Volvo with the XC60. To them we must add, in addition, the Jaguar F-Pace or the Porsche Macan, among other models.
