Geneva 2018: the new 2019 Toyota Auris arrives with two hybrid versions of 122 and 180 HP
The third generation of the Toyota Auris arrives with a more dynamic design and two hybrid versions. In addition, Toyota will suppress diesel engines in all its passenger cars in Europe since this year.
The great novelty of Toyota at the Geneva International Motor Show 2018 is the third generation of the Toyota Auris, which exhibits a new design more bold and elegant, and in turn comes with two hybrid versions: 1.8 liters of 122 hp and 2.0 liters of 180 HP.
In addition, the company has announced its intention to suppress the diesel engines of all its cars in the European market from this year. Toyota explained that this decision is due to the strong demand from customers of hybrid vehicles in its main models and stressed that the new Auris, as happened with the C-HR, will not have a diesel version. Other manufacturers that also move away from diesel are Volvo and Porsche.
Toyota explained that hybrid models accounted for 41% of their registrations in Europe in 2017, which meant a 38% increase, reaching a volume of 406,000 units. For its part, the diesel quota was less than 10% in Europe.
Given this decision, the president and CEO of Toyota in Europe, Johan van Zyl, said that Toyota has been a pioneer in hybrid vehicle technologies and noted that for years this engine has been the dominant. "In our latest model, the Toyota C-HR, hybrid versions accounted for 78% of sales last year," he added.
The company revealed that the next step of its engine strategy in Europe is that the new Auris, unveiled in Geneva, will be manufactured next year at the factory in Burnaston (United Kingdom) and that it does not have a diesel version, but that will have a variant of gasoline and two hybrids. This decision comes after the company announced in March last year that it was going to invest 240 million pounds (272 million euros at the current exchange rate) at the Burnaston factory. This production facility is being updated with the incorporation of new equipment, technologies and systems that will allow the manufacture of models based on the global Toyota TNGA platform.
Third generation of the Toyota Auris
The third generation of the Toyota Auris, built on the New Global Architecture of Toyota (TNGA, for its acronym in English), will be offered with a 1.2-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with 116 horsepower and two hybrid alternatives: a hybrid variant 1.8 HEV of 122 horses, similar to the one mounted on the Prius and on the C-HR, and a 2.0 HEV, of 180 horses.
The new Auris has a more dynamic design and a frontal more striking than its predecessor due to its large grille. The total length has been increased by 40 mm, with a longer wheelbase. The overall height has been reduced by 25 mm, for a more elegant overall design and a lower and attractive hood. Toyota maintains its two-tone design with a black roof, which makes a nice contrast with the champagne gray body. On the back we see two exhaust outlets, a pronounced spoiler and LED C-shaped headlights that extend to the trunk door.
At the stand of the firm in Geneva has also been seen in European premiere a new series of prototypes of the firm, such as the Concept-i series, with electric propulsion system with battery, and the Fine-Comfort Ride, with battery of gas.
